The RYA Competent Crew course is 5 days long, which can be taken either over consecutive days in one go, or it can be split over 2 weekends consisting, one of which will include a Friday.

The Competent Crew course starts from our Southampton HQ and takes place in the Solent. The course is all about learning to sail and over the 5 days, you will learn all you need to know to become a useful crew member, including how to raise and lower the sails, how to set them correctly to the wind, how to tie a number of useful knots and what to do if someone falls overboard. It’s great fun.

Course overview

No previous sailing experience is required to undertake the RYA Competent Crew qualification, but there is a minimum age requirement of 12. It is assumed you will be a complete novice or that you may have done a bit of sailing before. If you are unsure if this is the right course for you either give us a call or have a look at our ‘Find your Level’ wizard.

With the RYA Competent Crew course under your belt you can then progress to more advanced courses such as the RYA Day Skipper or Coastal Skipper courses. These courses build upon the skills learned in the Competent Crew course and provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to skipper a yacht on coastal passages.
