With longer nights approaching and the weather becoming cooler, you thoughts naturally turn to next year and how you’ll be spending your time at sea. Will it be the Solent, the East Coast or will you finally become a Day Skipper and charter that yacht around the Med.?

An autumn/winter theory course is perfect preparation, whether you are looking to pass your VHF Radio course or aiming to complete your Competent Crew or Day Skipper certificates, there is a warm classroom waiting for you, with a knowledgeable trainer looking to make sailing become second nature for you.

Straight From the Course’s Mouth

We run most of our courses in London, either at the prestigious Cruising Association or in boardrooms and offices around the city.

Theory Courses

The courses are much loved by our customers but don’t take our word for it. Here’s what just a few of our happy customers say about them on Tripadvisor.

“Just passed my Yachtmaster Theory examinations and like all the previous training I’ve completed with First Class Sailing, everything was very well organised and the instructor was brilliant. His enthusiasm and energy were infectious, which made the classes both highly informative and good fun.

I can recommend First Class Sailing without hesitation and am already looking forward to doing my Coastal Skipper practical with them.” Hani S, London

Theory Courses

Our courses are suitable for all ranges of experience. From beginners to those wanting to go that extra bit further and will help you become a brilliant sailor.

“This is an excellent, professionally organised course. The instruction was excellent. Attending the theory course in the evenings demands commitment, but everyone who turned up regularly passed, and the practical was great fun, going beyond what we needed to know, allowing us to feel we had made real progress” Diane P, Greater London

Your Place or Ours?

We have a very open system of teaching and the courses take place in a variety of locations.

On one hand, we run courses at CA House, the famous home of the Cruising Association. It has a very well stocked library, there are always lectures and talks by very experienced sailors, plus rooms should you want to overnight in London.

On the other hand, customers can arrange courses that run in their boardroom or office. This is very useful if there are friends or colleagues who want to learn with you, and allows people in the neighbourhood to also join in.

You’ll be given all the assistance you need if you take this route as we’ve run courses in venues around Canary Wharf, Holborn and Limehouse so give us a call and get some advice on the best option.

As the last word (or two) this is what ‘Clarkybravo’ wrote on Tripadvisor about the courses they attended…

“I attended the Day Skipper theory course which was conveniently set up in the City of London over two months. Firstly, I felt I was given an abundance of course materials including reference guides, navigational reading and general seamanship theory. All material highly digestible. Obviously, the tutor adds in his own annecdotes and wide experience with plently of real examples and picking up on the latest topical news items that provoke thought and the beginnings of a real passion for the subject.

Theory Courses

Our tutor (Daryl) had his own pet subject of detailed weather analysis and provided daily emails on interpretation of meterological charts that went well beyond the scope of the course but which I believe enhanced the safety aspect of the subject by some order of magnitude. Daryl covered the course material very well but also imbued the wider subject with layers of safety experience that consciously and sub-consciously will reduce stress in those inevitable panics likely to be encountered at sea.”
