RYA Lost Certificate: How to Get a Replacement

If you have lost or damaged an RYA certificate then you should contact the RYA Training Centre with whom you took your course.. They can then advise you on the best route to get a replacement. There are two ways in which you can get an RYA replacement certificate, and the option you take depends on which type of certificate it is.

For example, if you have lost an RYA certificate for either Yachtmaster Coastal, Yachtmaster Offshore, Yachtmaster Ocean, Day Skipper Practical, Coastal Skipper Practical, or a VHF license, (any that involve photo ID), then tell us immediately. We can email you a link to a Declaration of Loss Form on the RYA website that you then fill out and submit to the RYA who will then contact you with next steps. Lost photo ID certificates cannot be replaced by the training centre.

Once the RYA has received your application for a replacement certificate, it could take up to 10 working days to process your request. However, during peak periods, such as the summer months, processing times may be longer.

On the other hand, if you need an RYA certificate replacement for Competent Crew, Day Skipper Shorebased, Yachtmaster Shorebased, Ocean Yachtmaster Shorebased, Diesel Engine, Sea Survival, Offshore Personal Safety, or the First Aid course then we can reissue a lost certificate to you directly. There will be a replacement certificate and administration fee.

If you didn’t take an RYA course with First Class Sailing, then we recommend you contact the sailing school you gained the certificate with.

What to do if the training centre no longer exists?

If your lost RYA certificate was issued by a training centre that is no longer in existence, or if your certificate was issued more than 10 years ago, it may not be possible to get a replacement certificate. It largely depends on the schools records. In such cases, you may need to retake the relevant RYA qualification. Or maybe use it as an opportunity for some more training and go for the next level…
