The Course
If you’re looking for an RYA First Aid Course “near me”, then you can choose from Southampton or London dates. The classes are for one day, and you will receive your certificate once completed.
First aid at sea is an essential skill, as in the unlikely event of a medical emergency, prompt action and a little sailing first aid knowledge can save lives. The one day RYA First Aid at Sea Course provides a working knowledge of First Aid for people using small craft, and support to skippers of yachts and small craft working within 60 nautical miles of a safe haven.
The RYA First Aid Course is approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The RYA First Aid certificate is valid for three years.
Included in the price is a copy of the latest edition of the St John Ambulance/St Andrew’s First Aid/British Red Cross First Aid Manual.
The course is all classroom based. It covers all the usual first aid subjects, but from a boating perspective. It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on cross channel passages.
The one day RYA First Aid at Sea Course is held in London (often at the Cruising Association in Limehouse) and in our classroom in Shamrock Quay, Southampton. However, if there is sufficient demand and this is not near you to make it practical, it can be held in your office anywhere in the UK. Included with the course is latest edition of the First Aid Manual required for the course.
The RYA First Aid Course is approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The certificate is valid for three years. The certificate is accepted for Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore Practical exam candidates, RYA practical instructors, and skippers of small commercial vessels up to category 2.
RYA First Aid Course Syllabus
- Demonstrate artificial ventilation & chest compression (CPR)
- Demonstrate how to turn a casualty into the recovery position
- Detail the treatment for shock
- Apply direct pressure to a wound and control bleeding
- Demonstrate how to bandage a wound
- Outline treatment for seasickness
- Outline the prevention, recognition and treatment of hypothermia
- Outline the necessary precautions when treating a cold water immersion casualty
- Outline the prevention, recognition and treatment of concussion
- Outline the prevention, recognition and treatment of compression
- Outline the treatment for asthma attacks, burns, diabetic emergencies, epilepsy and heart attacks
- List the precautions needed when handling a spinal injury
- Demonstrate how to immobilise a fracture
- List actions needed to prepare for helicopter evacuation
At some point in the course you will be lying on the floor to practice the recovery position. You should bear this in mind when choosing what to wear to the course.
There are limited tea/coffee facilities in the building [kettle etc]. There are places nearby. You are welcome to bring lunch if you wish to avoid having to go out at lunchtime.
What did you like most about about your course? Well-defined and beautifully balanced act between people, didactics and technology. Combo is rarely achieved successfully but it hits the bull's eye! From the first feedback onwards it's guaranteed you are not alone! I like the way anecdotes and facts are sprinkled occasionally alongside the syllabus, like recent ship wrecks in the Channel, etc. This certainly makes reading more interesting as text books tend to be somewhat drier. Please use any occasion to exploit that approach. That enriches the reader immensely as it is first-hand knowledge in its purest form, and that is certainly difficult to obtain anywhere else.
