Luxury Sailing in a Race Fit for Vikings

Once in a while, it is refreshing to get out of your sailing comfort zone, experience some testing new waters and sights that will live with you for the rest of life. So imagine doing that in comfort!

There is an opportunity this June/July for two couples to sail from Norway to Iceland in the Viking Offshore Race in a ship that has been built with luxury as the first option.

Lasting 21 days this amazing voyage will see you stopping at Shetland and Faroes Isles while in between you’ll be racing across a challenging sea.

Being mid-summer there will be daylight almost the whole voyage, so your night shifts will certainly be colourful as you plot a course the Vikings would have taken many years ago.

What they would have made of your comfortable yacht would be a wild guess, but you will be sailing on a brand new steel Bruce Roberts 55. Built with these sort of waters in mind, she has heating, hot water and an internal and external steering position.

As you can see in the video below your destinations are Lerwick in the Shetland Islands, Torshavn in the Faroe Islands and Reykjavik in Iceland. These legs are not long but will be a challenge so as a couple you will need some sailing experience.

There will be plenty of time for exploring the islands and see sights that few get to enjoy.

What to Expect On Board

As usual with adventures like these you will be expected to help with all the cooking and cleaning, plus take part in all aspects of keeping a watch and sailing the boat.

There are two helming positions, one in the cockpit and one in the coach house. There are 3 luxury double cabins, 2 single bunks (often left empty) and 3 heads/showers.

With room for two couples and a skipper and mate on board, there will be plenty of room for everyone, plus the luxury of having all the mod cons in a ship that meets the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency international standards to sail anywhere in the world.

First Running of the Viking Race

You’ll also be taking part in a piece of sailing history as this is the first running of the Viking Race.

Since 1988 there has been the Shetland Race which is run by Hordaland Sailing Association. But for several years the Norwegian Sea Sailing and Crossing Club with from support from the Norwegian Sailing Federation have extended the original race to the Faroe Isles and Iceland, forming the Viking Offshore Race.

They have sent out invitations to many sailors in all Nordic and Northern Europe countries so there will be a varied selection of entrants and certainly some entertaining moments ashore.

The full details about this trip can be found on this page: Nordic Offshore Adventure

Cost is £6930.00 per couple with everything provided apart from flights, insurance and spending money.
