A Sailor's Pilgrimage To The Pulpit Rock

The voyage to Norway is not just about the journey, the destination is amazing and as you will read below one of the highlights is a trek to a viewpoint that fills some with a sense of awe.

Taking The Weather With Us

Today we were able to spend some time on dry land and hike to the spectacular Preiketolen or Pulpit Rock. A short cab ride from the dock took us to the start of the four-hour trail to this iconic lookout in weather which was more Mediterranean than Scandinavian.

The granite Slab path winds its way up through a steep forest of pine and silver birch interspersed with moorland and lakes. The spectacular views across the fjords provided opportunities to get our breath back and take photographs. The path itself is a marvel of engineering and was recently improved by Nepalese Sherpas.

Eventually, we reached the Spectacular Pulpit Rock lookout and were rewarded with panoramic views of the fjord we had sailed the previous day.

The crowds of selfie-taking tourists seemed to venture too close to the edge for comfort but without mishap.

Having eaten our lunch in the sun we made our way back to the car park for a beer and the ride back to the boat. The intrepid hikers were greeted by the smell of freshly baked lemon drizzle cake and cheese scones courtesy of the rest of crew. Fantastic! A great day out was had by all and many thanks to Sue and Nick for making it happen.
