Our Day Skipper Course is ideal for aspiring skippers who have some yachting experience and basic navigation and sailing skills. But what happens once you complete the course? Perhaps you want to build up your confidence further but aren’t quite ready to progress onto something more advanced, or maybe you want just a little extra experience. If this sounds like you, then our recommendations for Day Skipper confidence building sailing trips could be the ideal solution.
The first to consider is to sail with us to Weymouth and back from Southampton. This confidence building trip lasts a weekend from Friday through to Sunday and gives you the chance to build miles (120+ nautical miles), experience a couple of 60 mile passages and practise your night sailing skills. You will navigate through the Needles channel as part of the weekend. The 60 mile passages can be counted as qualifying passages for Yachtmaster Offshore.

Another option would be a weekend “Channel Hop” where you either sail with us to the Channel Islands or over to France in one weekend. This is the perfect confidence building sailing trip to take after you complete RYA Day Skipper. It will give you experience of again building about 120 miles. It will also help you gain confidence in night sailing skills and the open sea whilst crossing the shipping lanes of the English Channel.
Both options are fantastic ways to build confidence due to the number of miles you will build, and the experience of sailing at night. Here’s a link into each option again:
For those ready to skipper a 60 mile passage there is the option for 2 people to have a go. One person on the trip and someone else on the trip back.
Build your confidence with boat handling
You could also look at our Boat Handling Weekend. This will give you more confidence in handling a yacht in close quarters to other yachts. It gives you an opportunity to be instructed in berthing and unberthing techniques and then practice handling a yacht under power on and off pontoons in a variety of marinas. Time will also be dedicated to boat handling under sail so you will practice picking up buoys, man over board and maybe even sailing on and off pontoons.
In conclusion, once you have completed a Day Skipper course with us, we want you to be as confident as possible on the water. Many of our pupils love the idea that they can come back to us and see familiar faces as we get them onto a yacht again to build the confidence to last a lifetime.
If you are unsure about which post-Day Skipper confidence building trip is right for you, just call. We can even come up with an itinerary tailored to you if required.
