2,971 views | May 22nd, 2013It’s a packed calendar for sailing and boating enthusiasts this year, with a multitude of events coming up. Here’s a glimpse into the months ahead:
Cowes Week (3rd – 10th August)
Pretty much the biggest event in the UK sailing calendar, the Cowes Week regatta regularly attracts thousands of competitors from across the UK and beyond. People from all walks of life compete in the 40 daily races on the waters of the Solent, from yacht-racing hobbyists to Olympians and world champions. As well as the thrilling racing, there’s also a host of festivities including live music and a great firework display.
Fastnet Race 2013 (10th August)
The biennial Fastnet Race is considered to be one of the world’s biggest races, and attracts a wide range of sailors, both professional and amateur. The tricky Solent route really sorts the wheat from the chaff, however, and with this year’s event taking place on the last day of Cowes Week, it’s bound to see a huge number of competitors.
PSP Southampton Boat Show (13th – 22nd September)
If you missed London’s boat show there is another opportunity to catch the glitz and glamour of sailing with the 2013 Southampton Boat Show! This annual event is always packed with exclusive yacht debuts and launches, plus a plethora of exhibitors, stalls and attractions. You might even catch a glimpse of a celeb or two, with last year’s event seeing appearances from sport-stars Jenson Button and Ben Ainslie.
Henley Royal Regatta (3rd July – 7th July)
Arguably the most famous regatta the UK has to offer, the Henley Royal Regatta features spectacular rowing action from UK and overseas clubs. There are many events during the 5-day regatta, with the most anticipated being the Grand Challenge Cup, which dates back to 1839. This prestigious event is the perfect excuse to dust off your suit and tie.
West Lancashire Yacht Club 24 Hour Race (7th – 8th September)
Described as ‘the UK’s No.1 dinghy endurance race’, the West Lancs YC 24 Hour Race has been running for over 40 years and takes place annually on the marina lake at Southport. Sailing clubs, associations and universities from all corners of the United Kingdom will be going head to head for prizes and, of course, widespread recognition.
Portsmouth Boat Jumble (25th August)
Held at the historic Fort Purbrook, the Portsmouth Boat Jumble is the ideal spot to pick up second-hand marine equipment on the cheap, or sell your own unwanted boating items and free up some space (while also making a bit of cash to boot). With a strong sense of community at the jumble, this is also a great place to socialise with fellow enthusiasts.
