Radar Course

Radar is a fantastic aid to navigation and collision avoidance tool. If you know what you are doing with it! Join us on our 'Radar Training Yacht' for this 1 day course.

› Why learn to sail with First Class Sailing?

This 1 day course helps you to understand radar as an aid to navigation and collision avoidance.

Almost all cruising boats now have radar on board. The International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea broadly state that if you have a radar you must know how to use it. The RYA Radar Course will give you a good understanding of how the radar works and how to use it.

Radar is probably the most versatile of all electronic navigation aids, but the best results are only obtained when you know how to use all the functions correctly. It is not an all seeing eye, and can easily mislead those who do not understand its controls, allow for its limitations, or interpret its picture correctly.

The course will be taught on a specific yacht, moored alongside in Shamrock Quay, equipped with radar simulators. The yacht is a Dehler 41.

The RYA Radar Course teaches the theoretical basics, the controls and benefits of operating a radar, with an RYA Certificate being earned at the end of it.

The RYA and the MCA stress the importance of those operating boats with Radar fitted, to know how to use it properly and to do so in all appropriate conditions, not just in fog.

Importantly the Collision Regulations say: Rule 7. Risk of collision. Vessels must use all available means to determine the risk of a collision, including the use of radar (if available) to get early warning of the risk of collision by radar plotting or equivalent systematic observation of detected objects. (e.g. ARPA, AIS).

There is an optional extras that can be tacked on to the RYA Course.

RadarCourse PLUS

Our Radar Course PLUS builds upon your knowledge from the RYA Basic Radar Course, and trains you to use real Radar & AIS equipment, to become confident interpreting Radar pictures from real marine environments and situations. You need practice using real Radar and AIS in real sailing situations before being confronted with a real low visibility situation.

The Radar Course PLUS is run alongside at Shamrock Quay.

You will use the real on-board Radars / AIS / chart plotters against targets of opportunity on the River Itchen and determine using Radar and AIS, their: Speed, Direction, CPA for collision avoidance and their time of CPA or collision.

Both the RYA Radar course and the Radar Course PLUS are taught on a specific yacht, moored alongside in Shamrock Quay, equipped with radar simulators and both short and long range radars. (So not only do you get to operate two modern Radars but also to compare their characteristics to see which suits you and your boat best.)

The yacht is a Dehler 41.

The RYA Radar course will start at 9am and end around 5pm.

The Radar Course PLUS will start at 9am and end at 1pm.

There will only be up to 4 students.

The RYA Radar Course is £110.

The Radar Course PLUS price is £75

RYA Radar Course topics include:

  • how the radar set works
  • how its adjustments and features affect the way it works
  • target definition
  • radar reflectors
  • types of radar display
  • radar plotting
  • the use of radar in navigation and collision avoidance

Pen and Paper

What did you like most about about your course? Well-defined and beautifully balanced act between people, didactics and technology. Combo is rarely achieved successfully but it hits the bull's eye! How would you rate the support you received during your course on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being very poor and 5 being excellent? 5 no doubt. From the first feedback onwards it's guaranteed you are not alone! I like the way anecdotes and facts are sprinkled occasionally alongside the syllabus, like recent ship wrecks in the Channel, etc. This certainly makes reading more interesting as text books tend to be somewhat drier. Please use any occasion to exploit that approach. That enriches the reader immensely as it is first-hand knowledge in its purest form, and that is certainly difficult to obtain anywhere else. Well done. "
