This 1 day course helps you to understand radar as an aid to navigation and collision avoidance.
Almost all cruising boats now have radar on board. The International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea broadly state that if you have a radar you must know how to use it. The RYA Radar Course will give you a good understanding of how the radar works and how to use it.
Radar is probably the most versatile of all electronic navigation aids, but the best results are only obtained when you know how to use all the functions correctly. It is not an all seeing eye, and can easily mislead those who do not understand its controls, allow for its limitations, or interpret its picture correctly.
The course will be taught on Zoom, materials are couriered to your door before the course.
The RYA Radar Course teaches the theoretical basics, the controls and benefits of operating a radar, with an RYA Certificate being earned at the end of it.
The RYA and the MCA stress the importance of those operating boats with Radar fitted, to know how to use it properly and to do so in all appropriate conditions, not just in fog.
Importantly the Collision Regulations say: Rule 7. Risk of collision. Vessels must use all available means to determine the risk of a collision, including the use of radar (if available) to get early warning of the risk of collision by radar plotting or equivalent systematic observation of detected objects. (e.g. ARPA, AIS).
If you are looking to achieve the Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore qualifications you will need basic Radar knowledge. The examiner will likely ask you questions on the day. This course would be a good way to prepare and is highly recommended.

What did you like most about about your course? Well-defined and beautifully balanced act between people, didactics and technology. Combo is rarely achieved successfully but it hits the bull's eye! How would you rate the support you received during your course on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being very poor and 5 being excellent? 5 no doubt. From the first feedback onwards it's guaranteed you are not alone! I like the way anecdotes and facts are sprinkled occasionally alongside the syllabus, like recent ship wrecks in the Channel, etc. This certainly makes reading more interesting as text books tend to be somewhat drier. Please use any occasion to exploit that approach. That enriches the reader immensely as it is first-hand knowledge in its purest form, and that is certainly difficult to obtain anywhere else. Well done. "

He was patient and prepared to take the time to ensure we all had the best knowledge transferred to us. He was an excellent instructor and had a significant amount of detailed knowledge that was most helpful to me and the rest of the class.
