Gaining Commercial Endorsement

Everyone who applies for a commercial endorsement on their RYA/MCA Certificate of Competence must complete this course.

It explains the legal responsibilities and considerations that working afloat entails.

You have a duty to protect crew, passengers and other sailors, and if you don't follow the legal requirements expected of you, you can and will be held responsible.

Any of the following qualifications are eligible for commercial endorsement by the RYA. Many of these courses are available from First Class Sailing - follow the links below for more information:

  • Understanding your role in the commercial maritime environment
  • Ensuring your vessel is legal and suitable for the task in hand
  • Creating and implementing risk management & operating procedures
  • Planning and situational awareness - foreseeing potential circumstances and preparing for them
  • Compulsory carriage and regular maintenance of the appropriate safety equipment
  • Why correct manning is essential
  • Obligations to crew & passenger safety
  • Environmental responsibilities
  • Safe management of commercial watercraft

Once you’ve passed the course, you’ll be able to download your PPR certificate, which can then be submitted to the RYA with your commercial endorsement application. You will need to take a condensed version of the test whenever you’re renewing your commercial endorsement, to make sure your skills are up to date.

A Commercial endorsement will open the door for a variety of nautical careers; from delivery skipper to sailing instructor, charter yacht crew member to harbour master and several others. Where do you think it will take you?

For more details on the PPR online course, contact First Class Sailing on 0203 006 3717.

*You do not need to take the PPR course if you already hold an MCA Certificate of Competence as Officer of the Watch, Master 200, Master 500 or above - in this case you’ll need to include a copy of your MCA certificate to the RYA when you submit your commercial endorsement application form or renewal form.

The course is supplied by RYA Interactive through First Class Sailing - it's taken online and is fully compatible with PC, Mac and iPad (iOS 6.0 or higher), allowing you to learn wherever and whenever you like.

You'll be guided through the course in step by step modules, with directions to the sources and reference materials which you'll need to be familiar with as a professional, and example scenarios will help you apply your new-found knowledge to real-life situations.

The course is designed to help you find the answers your need, with less emphasis on simply committing complicated legal details to memory. At the end of the course, you'll complete two online exams to assess your knowledge.

If you find yourself struggling, First Class Sailing's experienced and knowledgeable team can offer advice and support throughout your course. Our principal Charlie Tulloch has worked in the yacht industry for many years, has a degree in Merchant Ship Operations and has been a member of the Merchant Navy - it should be possible for every question to be answered

What did you like most about about your course? Well-defined and beautifully balanced act between people, didactics and technology. Combo is rarely achieved successfully but it hits the bull's eye! How would you rate the support you received during your course on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being very poor and 5 being excellent? 5 no doubt. From the first feedback onwards it's guaranteed you are not alone! I like the way anecdotes and facts are sprinkled occasionally alongside the syllabus, like recent ship wrecks in the Channel, etc. This certainly makes reading more interesting as text books tend to be somewhat drier. Please use any occasion to exploit that approach. That enriches the reader immensely as it is first-hand knowledge in its purest form, and that is certainly difficult to obtain anywhere else. Well done. "

He was patient and prepared to take the time to ensure we all had the best knowledge transferred to us. He was an excellent instructor and had a significant amount of detailed knowledge that was most helpful to me and the rest of the class.
