Yacht Electrical and Marine Systems Course

For skippers, boat owners, aspiring boat owners and anyone wanting to better understand boat electrics and systems.

This 2 day Yacht Electrical and Systems Course is designed to help you understand marine electrics and the electrical systems you might find on board a yacht.

It is suitable for skippers and aspiring skippers, sailing boat owners, power boat owners, narrow boat owners and anyone just wanting to learn more about electrics and boat systems.

The course is held in our classrooms in Shamrock Quay, Southampton. It is a hands on practical course. You will be using multimeters, soldering irons, electrical boards and a working engine.

Whilst we will be looking at a working diesel engine this is not a course in how a diesel engines work. That is covered in the Diesel Engine Course.

The course will cover the following:

  • The basics of electrical circuits
  • You will be using multi meters and learning to identify and fix electrical faults
  • Battery types, health and maintenance
  • Battery chargers and charging faults
  • Making up 12V connections including crimping and soldering
  • Alternators and how they work.We will use our working classroom engine
  • Wiring diagrams
  • Solar panels, wind and hydro generators
  • Networking – NMEA cables, Seatalk, Chart plotter and displays
  • Instruments and connecting them
  • 240V Shorepower connections, breakers, sockets, invertors,
  • Bonding and galvanic isolators
  • Plus lots more
