A VHF radio is an essential piece of safety equipment and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. The course will teach you these procedures. It is a legal requirement that someone on board must have a licence.
The VHF Radio Course is also known as the Short Range Certificate (SRC) Course. We conduct these courses mostly in London.
It is a legal requirement that someone on board must have a VHF Radio licence. All charter companies require you to have a license if you charter a boat.
To get the VHF Radio Licence, (Short Range Certificate SRC) you must:
You do not have to book the assessment at the same time as booking a course. If you opt for the online course you must still attend an assessment session in person. You cannot take the assessment online.
There is some pre-course reading and we will send you a pack about 5 days before the course. We will also email you some notes as soon as you book a course.
Once you have taken the Classroom or the Online Course you are eligible to attend an assessment session.
The assessment will consist of a short written paper (30 minutes) followed by a practical session with others.
The whole session will take approximately 3 hours. We will allocate slots in the order in which you book. If you have particular timing requirements please get in touch to discuss.
It is possible to attend an assessment session with First Class Sailing if you have not taken the Classroom or Online Course with us.The school where you completed the course will need to post us an SRC eligibility form for you.
There is no time limit between taking the course and the assessment however you would be advised to take the assessment pretty soon after you complete the course.
There is no age limit to take the VHF course however you must be aged 16 and over to take the assessment.
To attend an assessment costs £45 if the course has been completed with another provider. There is also a £60 licence fee payable to the RYA on the day of the assessment.
It can take up to 21 days to receive your VHF (SRC) Radio Licence. If you pay an additional fee the RYA will turn it around for you in 48 hours. (Very useful if you are chartering a yacht imminently!)
Upon completion of the classroom or online course you will have been required to fill an exam application form. You must bring this to the assessment.
You must also bring with you your card details to pay the RYA £60 for the licence fee once you have passed the test at the end of the day. Cash will not be accepted. Plus a passport photo. And a pen.
To be awarded the SRC, students must be able to:
A. Distress situations
1. Define a distress situation.
2. Initiate a DSC Distress Alert, with position and time input manually or automatically.
3. Send a Mayday call and message by voice.
4. Respond appropriately to a DSC Distress Alert and to a Mayday call and message,including relay of a distress message.
5. Know how to deploy an EPIRB and a SART.
6. Know the procedure for cancellation of a distress message sent in error.
B. Urgency Situations
1. Define an urgency situation.
2. Initiate a DSC urgency alert.
3. Send an urgency message by voice.
4. Respond appropriately to an urgency message.
C. Safety Situations
1. Identify a situation in which a safety message is appropriate.
2. Input a DSC safety alert.
3. Send a safety message by voice.
4. Receive Maritime Safety Information by NAVTEX.
D. Routine Communication
1. Initiate a routine call using DSC.
2. Establish communication and exchange messages with other stations by voice on appropriate channels.
3. Test the radiotelephone by means of an appropriate test call.
4. Enter a DSC group and Individual MMSI.
5. Maintain an appropriate listening watch on DSC and voice channels.
6. Use the International Phonetic Alphabet.
