This 3 day heavy weather training weekend provides safe training for inshore sailors who are looking to extend their offshore and heavy weather sailing knowledge.
The weekend will be conducted on a 72ft yacht built to sail the wrong way round the world - so very solid and great in heavy weather.
With any luck the weather will be foul but if the weather does not play ball there is plenty that can be covered and if necessary we would seek out rougher water such as the race of Portland Bill.
You will have the opportunity to learn the theory behind heavy weather sailing and then apply it to practical techniques when on board.
Some of the heavy weather techniques you will cover include:
• Heaving to
• Lying a Hull
• Motoring and motor sailing
• Running barepoled
• Steaming warps or drogues
• Sea anchors
• Snugging down and pressing on
The Yacht was built to sail around the world. A feat it has achieved twice in the BT Global Yacht Race. She is a very safe and solid yacht, spacious and comfy and well suited to sailing in heavy weather. She meets all MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) safety Coding requirements.
There will be a professional instructor and mate aboard who will ensure your safety and will give as much instruction as needed so that you the crew all come together to sail the boat as a team. You will take an active role in helping sail and run the boat.
The accommodation is arranged towards the stern of the boat.
Some of the heavy weather techniques you will cover include:
Join the yacht 10am on Friday morning
Depart from the yacht on Sunday afternoon 4pm.

Bring you own oilskin. If you do not we will supply.

Big smiles as one of our sailing school yachts enters Southampton Water in a Force 7.
This gives a great example of how you safely learn under the guidance of a professional and experienced skipper. When that bad weather comes you'll be ready.
