Sailing Course What Practical Sailing course for me? Competent Crew RYA Competent Crew Course![]() If you have done little or no sailing before or have spent a week or 2 sailing with friends in the UK or abroad then the best course for you is probably the RYA Competent Crew course. However, if you have sailed for 1 or 2 weeks with friends and took a keen active role in sailing the boat then you may be able to do go straight to Day Skipper. Questions you need to yourself is 'do I know how to hoist and lower the sails? Can I sail a triangular course confidently and competently, ie do I know when and how to tack and gybe and how to set the sails reasonably correctly? Do I know my knots? Do I know how to prepare the ropes for coming alongside a pontoon?' If you answer yes to these questions then you can consider yourself already at RYA Competent Crew level and can go straight to Day Skipper practical level. The RYA Competent Crew course is a 5 day course. It can be taken over two weekends or 5 consecutive days. The Competent Crew course is also aimed at the novice and provides a comprehensive introduction to the operation of a sailing boat. You will learn how to steer, how to hoist and drop the sails, how to set the sails to the wind correctly, mooring procedures, rope work, what to do if somebody falls overboard, how to use a tender, a bit about weather and lots lots more!
