We can also provide you with opportunities to take the Ocean Yachtmaster exam which requires you to do some deep sea sailing. The RYA Practical Sailing Courses which includes Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Preparation courses are all 5 days long. First Class Sailing offer these courses in 3 different formats: over 2 weekends - one short and one long that includes either a Friday or a Monday over 5 consecutive days - a Monday to a Friday over 5 consecutive days including a weekend - eg a Thursday to a Monday If you have done little or no sailing before this is the course for you. If you have done the Competent Crew course (or have experience to the same level as that achieved on the CC course) and have done the Day Skipper shorebased navigation course then this is the course that brings it together and teaches you to be a skipper. This is the one that most charter companies require you to have. Read more about the Day Skipper practical course. This is for the more refined and advanced. You will have done a lot of sailing already. This course is about improving your skippering skills. Read more about the Coastal Skipper practical course. At the successful completion of a course a RYA Certificate of Completion will be awarded. In addition there is also the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal (previously Coastal Skipper) Certificate of Competence, the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence and the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence. These worldwide recognised certificates are for more experienced skippers who require Maritime and CoastGuard Agency Certification for commercial reasons. To obtain this qualification you must undergo a 6 to 10 hour practical exam on board. Read more about the Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence. To get this qualification you must pass a 8 to 12 hour exam. Prior to taking this exam we recommend you take a 5 day Yachtmaster Prep course.
