The VHF Radio Course is also known as the Short Range Certificate (SRC) Course. We conduct these courses mostly in London.

It is a legal requirement that someone on board must have a VHF Radio licence. All charter companies require you to have a license if you charter a boat.

To get the VHF Radio Licence, (Short Range Certificate SRC) you must:

  1. Attend and successfully complete this 1 day VHF Radio Classroom Course in London (or take the online course) AND
  2. Attend and pass a separate classroom based assessment, also in London

You do not have to book the assessment at the same time as booking a course. If you opt for the online course you must still attend an assessment session in person. You cannot take the assessment online.

There is some pre-course reading and we will send you a pack about 5 days before the course. We will also email you some notes as soon as you book a course.

The course will teach you how to correctly operate a VHF Radio and give you the knowledge you need to take the VHF Assessment. The VHF Radio Licence (or SRC) is the qualification required by law that someone must have if there is a VHF radio on board.

Courses usually start at 10am and finish at 5pm.

You need to book an assessment separately and can view dates here. To attend an assessment costs £30. There is also a £60 licence fee payable to the RYA on the day of the assessment.

It can take up to 21 days to receive your VHF (SRC) Radio Licence from the RYA. If you pay an additional fee the RYA will turn it around for you in 48 hours. (Very useful if you are chartering a yacht imminently!)

There is no age limit to take the VHF Radio Course. You must be 16 years or over to take the VHF Assessment.

If you opt for the online course you must still attend an assessment session in person. You cannot take the assessment online.

If there is demand at your workplace we can run a course and assessment over 3 or 4 evenings or a weekend. If you would like us to hold a VHF Radio course for you at your office in London do get in touch with us.

If you hold the 'old' VHF licence (pre -1999) or a UK aviation radio licence you need to upgrade your qualification and may skip the course and jump straight to the assessment.

What did you like most about about your course? Well-defined and beautifully balanced act between people, didactics and technology. Combo is rarely achieved successfully but it hits the bull's eye! How would you rate the support you received during your course on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being very poor and 5 being excellent? 5 no doubt. From the first feedback onwards it's guaranteed you are not alone! I like the way anecdotes and facts are sprinkled occasionally alongside the syllabus, like recent ship wrecks in the Channel, etc. This certainly makes reading more interesting as text books tend to be somewhat drier. Please use any occasion to exploit that approach. That enriches the reader immensely as it is first-hand knowledge in its purest form, and that is certainly difficult to obtain anywhere else. Well done. "

LJ,

"The Instructor was an excellent coach and really took the time with our class to ensure we all understood all aspects of the course. He was patient and prepared to take the time to ensure we all had the best knowledge transferred to us. He was an excellent instructor and had a significant amount of detailed knowledge that was most helpful to me and the rest of the class.
