{"id":6831,"date":"2024-10-28T15:21:09","date_gmt":"2024-10-28T15:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.firstclasssailing.com\/blog\/?p=6831"},"modified":"2024-10-28T15:21:09","modified_gmt":"2024-10-28T15:21:09","slug":"international-certificate-of-competence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.firstclasssailing.com\/blog\/international-certificate-of-competence\/","title":{"rendered":"International Certificate of Competence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) is a globally recognised qualification that demonstrates proficiency in yacht handling and operation, allowing individuals to charter yachts internationally.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex flex-col-reverse lg:grid lg:grid-cols-12 lg:items-center lg:gap-x-8\">\n<div class=\"lg:col-start-1 xl:col-start-1 mt-6 lg:mt-0 lg:row-start-2 col-span-6\">\n<h3 class=\"text-2xl font-bold tracking-tight text-fcs-dark-900\">To charter a yacht you do need a licence<\/h3>\n<p class=\"pt-3 text-base text-fcs-dark-primary text-justify text-fcs-formatted\">A common question we get asked is what \u2018sailing licence\u2019 do I need to charter or own a yacht.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-3 text-base text-fcs-dark-primary text-justify text-fcs-formatted\">To own a yacht you don\u2019t need a license and there are a great many number of people who have lots of sailing experience and own a yacht but don\u2019t have a license.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-3 text-base text-fcs-dark-primary text-justify text-fcs-formatted\">To charter a yacht however, you do need a licence and most yacht charter companies in the world accept RYA qualifications. In the Mediterranean a Day Skipper qualification is required. In tricky places to sail like Scotland you may need a Coastal Skipper qualification or something higher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-3 text-base text-fcs-dark-primary text-justify text-fcs-formatted\">A few charter companies don&#8217;t fully recognise them. Where this is the case an ICC is the recognised qualification. If you are planning to sail or cruise within Europe and the Mediterranean the RYA recommends skippers to hold an ICC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-3 text-base text-fcs-dark-primary text-justify text-fcs-formatted\">ICC stands for International Certificate of Competence. And it is just that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"lg:col-start-7 flex-auto lg:row-start-2 col-span-6\">\n<div class=\"bg-white flex justify-center overflow-hidden rounded-sm\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"object-cover object-center\" src=\"https:\/\/www.firstclasssailing.com\/img\/information\/international-certificate-of-competence\/map.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"flex flex-col-reverse lg:grid lg:grid-cols-12 lg:items-center lg:gap-x-8\">\n<div class=\"col-start-1 col-span-12\">\n<h3 class=\"text-2xl font-bold tracking-tight text-fcs-dark-900\">There are 2 ways of obtaining an ICC:<\/h3>\n<p class=\"pt-3 text-base text-fcs-dark-primary text-justify text-fcs-formatted\"><strong>1.<\/strong>\u00a0If you are an RYA member and have already obtained your Day Skipper Practical certificate (or higher qualification), send the ICC application form and a photocopy of your Day Skipper Practical Certificate to the RYA. For clarification please consult the list of certificates eligible for conversion on the back of the ICC application form. Contact us for a copy of the ICC application form.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-3 text-base text-fcs-dark-primary text-justify text-fcs-formatted\"><strong>2.<\/strong>\u00a0By taking a practical test. The syllabus is outlined in the application. The test lasts approximately half a day and can be taken on your own boat or we can provide a boat and an instructor\/examiner. The test includes: questions on safety, collision avoidance and for coastal waters navigation and pilotage<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-3 text-base text-fcs-dark-primary text-justify text-fcs-formatted\">This qualification is available to BRITISH CITIZENS or bona fide BRITISH RESIDENTS.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"lg:col-start-7 flex-auto lg:row-start-2 col-span-6\">\n<div class=\"bg-white flex justify-center overflow-hidden rounded-sm\"><img class=\"object-cover object-center\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"flex flex-col-reverse lg:grid lg:grid-cols-12 lg:items-center lg:gap-x-8\">\n<div class=\"col-start-1 col-span-12\">\n<h3 class=\"text-2xl font-bold tracking-tight text-fcs-dark-900\">RYA Fees for The International Certificate of Competence<\/h3>\n<p class=\"pt-3 text-base text-fcs-dark-primary text-justify text-fcs-formatted\">If you are an RYA member The International Certificate of Competence will be issued free of charge. . If you are not an RYA member there is an admin fee.
