{"id":234,"date":"2012-02-23T09:44:04","date_gmt":"2012-02-23T09:44:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.firstclasssailing.com\/blog\/?p=234"},"modified":"2012-02-23T09:44:04","modified_gmt":"2012-02-23T09:44:04","slug":"marco-takes-the-lead-a-day-he-will-never-forget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.firstclasssailing.com\/blog\/marco-takes-the-lead-a-day-he-will-never-forget\/","title":{"rendered":"Marco takes the lead-A day he will never forget"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstclasssailing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Marco-takes-the-lead.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-235\" title=\"Marco takes the lead\" src=\"https:\/\/www.firstclasssailing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Marco-takes-the-lead-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"378\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally our dive to penguin latitudes paid its dividends and today we<br \/>\njumped in the lead of the third leg of the Global Ocean Race with a lead<br \/>\nof 30 miles over Cessna Citation who had chosen a more northerly option.<br \/>\nWe are still on full time radar watch for icebergs, the risk of finding<br \/>\none on our way should be progressively decreasing but water temperature is<br \/>\nat the lowest we&#8217;ve seen at just 6C, air temperature is 4C and with the<br \/>\nwind chill we had the dubious pleasure of fine snow earlier today.<\/p>\n<p>We are obviously incredibly happy, 6 months ago I would have never even<br \/>\nentertained the possibility of leading the race on the approach to Cape<br \/>\nHorn, we are savouring the moment like a rare whiskey but we are under no<br \/>\nillusion that we will be able to maintain our lead, we will certainly<br \/>\nfight hard but the next 2 days we will have strong wind reaching<br \/>\nconditions probably Cessna&#8217;s strongest point of sail, the perfect wind<br \/>\nangle that already saw the new hull establishing a 24 our run record of<br \/>\n359 miles in the previous leg. Whilst enjoying our spell as leaders we<br \/>\nremain on full alert for further opportunities to extend the lead or catch<br \/>\nup should we drop behind again.<\/p>\n<p>For now, this is a day I&#8217;ll never forget, I guess my grandchildren will<br \/>\neventually get sick of hearing the story told a million times over!
