Sailing Course What Practical Sailing course for me? Coastal Skipper RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Courses After the Day Skipper Practical course comes the RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Course. The RYA Coastal Skipper course covers the more refined skippering techniques required for coastal and offshore passages. Before doing this course it is assumed you have navigation skills to the same standard as that learnt on the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Shorebased course and sailing experience to that obtained from having done the Day Skipper practical course. You should have at least 15 days sea time with 2 as skipper, 300nm and 8 night hours.Upon sucessful completion of the course you are awarded a Coastal Skipper Course Completion Certificate. The RYA Coastal Skipper course is a 5 day course and must be completed over 5 consecutive days. RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence There is another Certificate that relates to the Coastal Skipper and that is the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence. (Until January 2010 this was call the Coastal Skipper Certificate of Competence). To obtain this qualification you must undergo a 6 to 10 hour practical exam on board. To be eligible to take the exam you must have at least 30 days seatime (2 as skipper), 800nm and 12 night hours all within the last 10 years. If you have done the Coastal Skipper Practical course then the quality of this experience is deemed to be such that you only then need 20 days at sea (2 as skipper), 400nm and 12 night hours instead of the 30 days and 800nm. You also need a VHF Radio license and a First Aid Certificate to be awarded this certificate. These can each be obtained on a one day course. | |||
