Fastnet Challenger 3

Our preparations for the Rolex Fastnet Race are picking up a pace and our 15-strong crew have been hard at work, training for their attack on the tough waters of the English Channel and Irish Sea.

But up to now, you haven’t heard much from the 1st member of our crew – Challenger 3 the yacht we’ll be racing on board. Chartered from Tall Ships Adventures, our Challenger 3 is built for round-the-world sailing. It’s designed to handle even the toughest conditions at sea, remaining self-sufficient throughout extended sailing periods.

Prepared for the Challenge

World renowned designer Rob Humphreys is responsible for creating the stunning yacht, which measures an impressive 22m (72ft), has a 29m mast, and weighs 48 gross tonnes. The Challenger yacht barrels along at over 10 knots under sail and sleeps a maximum crew of 18.

The design of the yacht is perfect for beginner and youth sailors, allowing them to experience the thrills of racing a speeding yacht while remaining relatively safe. Beneath the steel deck, the Challenger features a large saloon and galley, as well as a comfortable sleeping area with bunk beds. There’s two toilets (aka heads) which are fitted with showers, and the yacht is heated to make sailing more cosy (especially in colder climates!).

Let the Gathering Begin

With the Fastnet Race fast approaching soon the Solent will be stormed by the biggest and the best offshore racing boats from around the globe.

Over 300 yachts will be jostling for position and battling the harsh ocean waves in the world’s largest offshore yacht race and we’re really excited to put the Challenger 3 to the test!
