Taking a shore-based RYA Day Skipper course makes sense for many reasons, five of which are listed below:

  1. It will make you a better and safer sailor whether you intend to be crew or skipper as you will learn, amongst other things:

    • How to work out tidal heights and tidal flow
    • How to get from A to B with the most efficient course
    • How to tell a cold front from a warm front
    • How each of the above effect you when you are sailing
    • Who has right of way over a fishing vessel in a Traffic Separation Scheme
  2. It’s a lot of fun! Our instructors are engaging and love teaching.
  3. If you are keen to become a skipper, perhaps you have plans to charter a yacht, then this course is a stepping stone to the Day Skipper practical course (to take the Day Skipper practical course you need to have taken the Day Skipper theory course, or at least have navigational knowledge to the same level).
  4. If you are remotely interested in maps, navigation or the weather, you will love this course!
  5. You will meet like-minded folk on the course with whom you may even end up going sailing with.

Why Take the Course Now?

When is the best time to take this course? Now is ideal because:

  1. It’s ‘bleedin’ cold outside at the moment – so rather than take this classroom based course in the warmer months when you could be outside doing something else (like sailing) it makes sense to take it now whilst the nights are long and dark!
  2. You put yourself in a good position to take the practical Day Skipper course as spring approaches. To take the Day Skipper practical course it’s essential that you have a sound knowledge of navigation – you get that by doing this Day Skipper theory course.
  3. Autumn and winter are popular times of year to take the course, consequently we have lots of dates and venues for you to choose from.

Our Day Skipper theory courses runs over 2 and ½ weekends or over 7 weeks (1 evening a week) and a weekend. We have a number of venues you can choose from, mostly (but not all) in London. The course is aimed at people that have done little or no sailing before or alternatively have done lots of sailing before (including racing) but have little or no navigational experience.
